JUVENILE SPRINT COLTS
Distance 1400 Track- America Fast Welcome to Digiturf's 32nd Championship Season. The "Champs" start off with the Colt Juvenile Sprint. I hope that everyone will enjoy the previews. If for some reason your horse is overlooked, remember that my record with picking winners last year was not the best, so if I don't pick you, it probably improves your chances!! AP DEVIL'S BAG(BLACK LOTUS) - Big mid-season purchase has lived up to his billing with an outstanding 2 year old campaign. He shows wins at every sprint distance including the final's distance of 1400. He loves a fast track and gets his favorite surface for the finals.MAHOGONY(KARL KHODER) -Tough hard-knocking colt hardly ever ran a bad race this season. He shows good efforts at every distance and on every surface and is a definite contender for top honors. He has a 2nd place finish on a fast track, and the distance will not be a problem.MONKEY WRENCH(PARANOID) - He burst on the scene in mid-season and had several impressive efforts including a win in the October 26th Qualifier at 1600, and a 2nd at 1200 on October 19th. He seems to favor a fast track and if he can run back to his November 2nd win, he throw a "monkey wrench" into the proceedings and help the stable walk off with their first championship. SPILL WINE(HORSE HEAVEN HILLS) -The stable will be hoping for a heavenly performance to get their first championship. This is another runner who can run well on a fast track. His best race was a 2nd on a fast track at this distance on October 5th to American Avenger. FIFTH SPIRIT(REDDAVE) -Shows a 3rd at 1600 on a yielding surface, and a 4th at 1200 on a muddy surface. His chances would have improved with an off track. Unfortunately, today's track surface is not to his liking.SUPER NIX(GO J GO) -If the track comes up fast for the finals, this could be a serious sleeper. He ran a very impressive 3rd in the September 14th. Landon Webster got him into all kinds of trouble that day, and he may have been the best horse in the race. DASHING WIZARD(REDDAVE) -Made the finals on the strength of a big win on September 9th. That win, at 1200 in the mud, with Heinrich Nikolaus aboard stamped him as a contender if the track came up muddy. But, the track for the finals will not be to his liking. CROWN ENCHANTED(FOGGYDAN) -Savvy mid-season pick up by this Hall of Fame Trainer. Burst on the scene in mid-season and quickly stamped himself as a contender in the October 19th Qualifier. That win was on a soft turf course at 1200. He needed and off-track for the finals but did not get it.GLADDER THAN GLAD(PRICER) -Stamped his entry to the finals thanks to a big 2nd to Monkey Wrench in the October 26th Qualifier. That race was at 1600 on a firm turf course. 1400 does not appear to be his best distance, but he has a chance because the track came up fast. NIGHTLY INTRUSION(WHYMEA FARMS) -Lightly raced colt had a huge win in the Sept 21 qualifier on a fast track. He also had a good 2nd in the mud on November 9th, and 4th place finish at 1200 on a yielding track on October 19th. He is lightly raced and a bit of a mystery horse but looks like he could contend if the breaks go his way. AMERICAN AVENGER(AMERICAN ALMS) -This is the first Championship Start for this relatively new barn and if the track comes up fast, this guy could surprise. He had an impressive win in the October 5th qualifier on a fast track at today's distance. He beat most of today's top contenders that day and for that reason can't be ignored. NFL CORNERBACK(GW STABLE) -Made the finals thanks to two 4th place finishes, one at 1000, and one at 1200. The stable has over 1000 wins but is still looking for their first Championship Winner. Most NFL Cornerbacks are great sprinters because they need a great time in the 40 yard dash to play football. The stable will be hoping he has a great time in the 1400 to be their first great sprinter. FOG SIREN(CHRISMAN) -Mid-season addition to the Chrisman Stable, made it to the finals despite not finishing better than 5th in any qualifier. Although he has run mainly on fast tracks, his best races were in the mud. Has not had much racing luck in qualifiers, so the stable is hoping he's due. STORMIN' STUD(DOCTOR TURF)-Made the finals thanks to a big 2nd place finish in the 2nd division of the November 16th qualifier. That race was at today's distance on a firm track, but most of his best races have been on off tracks or on the turf. RACE ANALYSISAlthough AP Devil's bag is a worthy pre-race favorite, this is a wide open race with several horses having a chance on their best. Mahogany, Monkey Wrench, and Spill Wine all got a surface they like, and have the ability to pull off the upset.American Avenger and Nightly Intrusion show excellent races on a fast track and have the talent to take it all if the breaks go their way. Crown Enchanted, Dashing Wizard, Fifth Spirit and Stormin' Stud did not get their favorite surfaces for this race, and for that reason will have to run lifetime bests on a fast track to contend. Although they do not look like they can grab the top spot, Gladder Than Glad and Super Nix got favorable surfaces and could get a share of the purse. NFL Cornerback looks like he prefers a shorter distance, while Fog Siren has not had much luck in qualifiers and will need a lot of breaks to grab a minor share. I think that half a dozen horses could win this race. I am going with the "chalk" and selecting AP Devil's Bag, but would not be surprised to see an upset. Good luck to all. Bob
